Responses to inflation of vagal afferents with endings in the lung of dogs.

چکیده
In dogs, inflating the lungs to pressures of 9 cm H2O or less reflexly increases heart rate, whereas inflating the lungs to pressures of 10-30 cm H2O reflexly decreases heart rate. The afferent fibers responsible for the cardioacceleration travel in the vagus nerves and are believed to be pulmonary stretch receptors, whereas the afferent responsible for the deceleration also travel in the vagus nerves, but are believed to be lung C-fibers. To identify the afferents responsible for these effects, we recorded the impulse activity of vagal afferents with endings in the left lung, while we slowly inflated that lung to 30-45 cm H2O. We found that 12 slowly adapting receptors fired at significantly lower inflation pressures than did 10 rapidly adapting receptors (5.8 +/- 1.5 vs. 13.5 +/- 2.2 cm H2O, respectively). We also found that 13 pulmonary C-fibers fired at significantly lower inflation pressures than did 10 bronchial C-fibers (16.4 +/- 1.8 vs 26.5 %/- 2.9 cm H2O, respectively). We conclude that slowly adapting receptors are likely to be responsible for the cardioacceleration evoked by low levels of inflation, and that both pulmonary and bronchial C-fibers are likely to be responsible for the cardiodeceleration evoked by high levels of inflation.

Vagal cardiopulmonary reflexes after total cardiac deafferentation.
BACKGROUND There are conflicting data regarding whether the primary source of afferent input for the vagal cardiopulmonary reflex emanates from receptors located in the ventricles, atria, and/or lungs. This study evaluated the effects of total cardiac deafferentation on the reflex control of efferent renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA) in response to a stimulus that affected all vagal recep...
متن کاملEffects of human eosinophil granule-derived cationic proteins on C-fiber afferents in the rat lung.
Experiments were performed to test the hypothesis that human eosinophil granule-derived cationic proteins stimulate vagal C-fiber afferents in the lungs and elicit pulmonary chemoreflex responses in anesthetized Sprague-Dawley rats. Intratracheal instillation of eosinophil cationic protein (ECP; 1-2 mg/ml, 0.1 ml) consistently induced an irregular breathing pattern, characterized by tachypnea (...
متن کاملHydrogen sulfide induces hypersensitivity of rat capsaicin-sensitive lung vagal neurons: role of TRPA1 receptors.
The sensitization of capsaicin-sensitive lung vagal (CSLV) afferents by inflammatory mediators is important in the development of airway hypersensitivity. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is an endogenous mediator inducing hyperalgesia through transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) receptors located on nociceptors. We conducted this study to determine whether H2S elevates the sensitivity of rat C...

Background. Stimulation of left ventricular (LV) receptors with sympathetic afferents generally results in reflex sympathoexcitatory responses. Stimulation of LV receptors with vagal afferents results in reflex sympathoinhibitory responses. Vagal afferents are known to be preferentially distributed to the inferoposterior (IP) wall of the LV. We tested the hypothesis that there is also a prefere...
متن کاملBehavior of left ventricular mechanoreceptors with myelinated and nonmyelinated afferent vagal fibers in cats.
The purpose of this study was to determine the behavior of left ventricular mechanoreceptors with myelinated vagal afferents and to compare them with endings with nonmyelinated vagal afferents. Single unit activity was recorded from 13 endings with nonmyelinated vagal afferents (conduction velocity 2.1 +/- 0.3 m/sec) and from 16 endings with myelinated vagal afferents (conduction velocity 7.3 +...
